zozo

The news comes over that the big fire on the Brooklyn waterfront on May 2
the largest fire in a decade , excluding 9/11 happened because 2 guys were burning insulation off copper wire in preparation to selling it to scrap dealers
Wire without insulation can fetch up to 1.25 per pound vs 75 cents per lb.
for wire with insulation
Arrested was Leszek Kuzera ,59
Kuzera and a buddy put the wire onto a pile of tires and wooden pallets ,
lit it and when it burned out of control, they ran off.
I was glad the wind wasn't blowing our way the day the of the fire
The black smoke columns filled the sky most of that day

Rip Shoei Immamura , Director of the original Black Rain in Japanese
and many other excellent movies

Mt Merapi. Indonesia .
Huge sky filling stacks of gray smoke billowing blotting out the blue sky behind
15,000 more villagers fled their homes when gas and ash rolled more then 3 miles down the slope ,
people jumped into rivers , jammed into and onto trucks
Merapi erupted previously in 1994 and 1930

the rains cleared away for the night ,
white clouds tinged orange passing in front of the moon
face of the moon clear in between black clouds shredding

Careers in old towns

Ha, today DCC would have been going on it's Euro tour - if it would have worked out
Doing months and months of prep, bringing things along and then ... nothing happened was a drag I didn't realize the psychological impact of until recent days .
Feeling slow and things don't matter as usual.
But it's been an interesting week already ...

Have been looking for Boris Policeband without success,
went down to his last known address on LES Monday but no clues there
until this AM when it turns out that Angela @ Soul Jazz got reply bk from her email to Dike Blair (Vacuum Records '79 producer of Boris' 45) - who had computer trouble and lost my recent emails to him.
Lives like a 10 minute walk away from my place ...
Maybe now we can get 2 Boris P cuts for the New York Noise #3

Tue's night got invited to a dinner in Soho with Phil from Harvestworks,
Joel Chadabe prez of Electronic Music Foundation who brought Joan La Barbara and Morton Subotnik.
If you know electronic music history, you will know who these last 2 are ...
Properly humbled, it was a good time discussing a range of things ,
but mainly focused on trying to get our 2 org's closer as we try to get this new EMusic center built downtown as part of the revitalization of dt after 9/11.
Massive task , but city funds have been forthcoming for a few rounds now.
Was alot of fun and great to hear what Morton was into these days
All in all, promising ...

This AM got mails from Amy Rigby , the singer songwriter who is an old friend from the late '70's - early '80's Tier 3 NYC scenes , just bk from Europe dates.
She's a trooper

And after devouring his 33 1/3 series book on Bowie's LOW the other day ,
I had mailed author Hugo Wilcken after noticing he was on a thread over @ Dissensus and he responded very nicely this morning.
Great book if you haven't checked it, and his other books sounds good too

While typing 'psychological impact', a military commentator on CNN said the exact same words at the same time Re: the death of Al-Zarqawi in Iraq
Odd synch , that
